In the Stars January 14-21 . . . Shining Light on the Astrology of the Week

In the coming week we can get a lot of traction on work and goals for 2024 with the Sun, Mars, Mercury, and Pluto in industrious Capricorn.

Mars ingressed into Capricorn on Thursday, January 4, where it will be until February 12. In Capricorn, Mars is exalted, giving strong energy for efficient output of work for the next five weeks. Mars went out of bounds on December 22, and will have a short period in this outer realm through January 23. When a planet is out of bounds, at the peak of its declination cycle, its symbolism is amplified. With Mars this shows up as increased potential for violence and conflict, as well as for taking risks and making strides.

The Capricorn New Moon occurred January 11th. Astrologer Kelly Hunter (starlady@substck.com) wrote in her January 11th newsletter: “During this Lunar cycle, Pluto is crossing over the great divide from Capricorn into Aquarius, and will be there most of this 2024. This is an intense start to not only a New Year, but a new Era! For added profundity, this New Moon squares the Nodes of the Moon, our collective Destiny Line, indicating a major turning point in our evolutionary process, with inevitable choices to be made, whether we perceive this or not. We “cross the great waters,” as the I Ching describes major moments of change. It is as if the world is turning inside out, and will never be the same again. We face onward into fresh new dimensions of experience as we redesign our global society.”

Pluto and the Sun move into Aquarius on Saturday, January 20th. This is Pluto’s second entry into Aquarius. Pluto will be in Aquarius until September 2, 2024, when it will back into Capricorn again for two months until November 19, just after the 2024 election, when it will move again into Aquarius for the third and final time.

In addition to this significant shift of Pluto into Aquarius, we approach a Dragon Year in Chinese astrology that begins February 9th, making for chaos as well as tremendous creative opportunities. The Chinese Dragon represents authority, prosperity, and good fortune. In spite of the upheaval in the world, this could be a year when new leaders emerge with innovative, powerful agendas.

Sunday, January 14, is a carefree day for dreaming and creating. The Moon makes benefic sextiles to Jupiter and Mars, giving optimism and expansiveness, though the Sun-Eris square may temper the exuberance, and give some frustration and angst.

Monday, January 15, is a relatively soft, easy day. The Capricorn Sun makes a benefic sextile to Neptune, creating a compassionate, creative landscape. The Pisces Moon sextiles Uranus, inviting us to dream differently. Then the Moon conjuncts Neptune, amplifying imagination, centering us on the love in our hearts. The Moon’s sextile to Pluto fuels the intent to end the day with kindness and caring.

Tuesday holds mixed energies. On one hand, there is an emphasis on nurturing and kindness with Venus conjunct Ceres. In contrast, the impatient Aries Moon squares Mars, which gives a tendency toward anger and disagreement. The cardinal Moon-Mars square gives drive and determination. A lot can be accomplished if this hard, demanding energy is channeled into productivity.

Mercury sextiles Saturn for the next few days, giving measured, practical thinking. This can be helpful in the face of the dynamic energy on Wednesday, January 17, from a Moon-Eris conjunction as well as a Moon-Pluto square. The Aries Moon trines Venus, stirring a desire for adventure and physical activity. With four planets in Capricorn and the Moon in Aries, this is a day for initiating projects and giving them the works. Both Capricorn and Aries are cardinal signs, which are action-oriented. The Sun is also close to Pluto, adding power to this hump day of the week. Make the most of it.

Thursday, January 18, is graced by an exalted Taurus Moon and numerous benefic aspects. The Taurus Moon loves comfort and pleasure, so make this a day to pamper yourself and others. Good food is especially on order! The Moon sextiles Saturn and trines Mercury, providing stability and the sound thinking that Taurus loves. The Moon conjoins Jupiter mid-day when we will want to spread our wings and be more expansive. Confidence is boosted by a Moon-Mars trine. With so many flowing aspects to the exalted Moon, this is bound to be a stellar day. Indulge in beauty and delights.

We awaken Friday, January 19, with grand plans in mind, supported by a Mercury-Jupiter trine. Relationships could be susceptible to idealism and misjudgment due to a Venus-Neptune square, calling for a need to sort out misperceptions. The Taurus Moon conjuncts Uranus and sextiles Neptune, giving intuition, insight, and vision. This is a day full of possibility and perhaps some surprise and magic. In addition, the day is fueled by the conjunction of the Sun and Pluto, perfecting in the early hours of Saturday at the last degree of Capricorn. The Taurus Moon reinforces the powerful alignment with added determination.

Pluto and the Sun move into Aquarius on Saturday, January 20, and the Moon into mutable air sign Gemini. This is a powerful alignment in the air element, inviting invention, innovation, and new ideas. Curiosity and conversation are generative. The Moon squares Saturn, giving discernment and caution, and perhaps some melancholy.

Sunday, January 21, beckons us to take a short trip of discovery. Connect with a sibling. This is a day for conversation and community.

We may be faced with tension created by desire and confusion, with the Moon squaring Neptune and opposing Venus on Monday, January 22. At 1:51 PST the Moon moves into Cancer, orienting us toward comfort for the next two days. Cozy up at home and give your space some love.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it is difficult to make good decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together, and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. We more easily get lost or meander in trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.
