In the Stars December 25, 2022, to January 1, 2023 . . . Shining Light on the Astrology of the Week

The Sun now shines in Capricorn. Winter is here, a time to hibernate, rest, and incubate. This barren, cold, dormant time is needed in nature to enable a strong budding and growing season in the spring and summer. We need more sleep and rest now in winter to prepare for a budding, robust springtime.

Mercury turns retrograde on Thursday, December 29. Complete travel plans and contractual agreements before then. The retrograde period from December 29 to January 18 is a period to re-group, re-think, reconsider and redo. It is a good time to clear your email in box, and to revise plans and writing projects. At the same time, communication is more easily confused, so be patient with errors and miscommunication

Jupiter moved into Aries on December 20th. Chiron turned direct December 22nd, joining Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. More visionary, expansive, creative energy is available to help projects move forward. Mars and Uranus are still retrograde, turning direct on January 12 and January 22 respectively. After January 22nd all planets will be direct in motion until Mercury again goes retrograde on April 20th.

The Moon and Mars continue Out of Bounds (OOB). Mars will be OOB for nearly six months until May 4th. Planets are OOB when their declination is more than 23 degrees, 27 minutes. When planets are out of bounds their energy is wild, unique, and extraordinary. The planet expresses itself unbounded, or without limits. People may be much more courageous and outspoken than usual. Because Mars is explosive and impulsive, volatile energy may be unleashed.

Christmas Day (Sunday) is a light day of activity in the cosmos. The Aquarius Moon trines Mars in Gemini, creating an inclusive, affable, friendly atmosphere for holiday celebrations. Include a brisk walk in your day. The Moon’s square to the nodes invites us to connect with family and friends from both past and present.

Monday is the last day of Chanukah and the first day of Kwanza. A Moon-Saturn conjunction draws us toward our responsibilities. An acrimonious Mercury-Eris square may rock the boat and create agitation. The Moon is void of course all day from 10:19 a.m. to 11:33 p.m. PST. Take it easy and stick to routine activities or take time out to read a book or connect with friends.

Tuesday’s Pisces Moon supports a day of flow, particularly in light of a Sun-Moon sextile in the morning. A Moon-Mars square later in the day may stir up motivation—or agitation.

Relationship difficulties may be soothed on Wednesday by the Venus-Neptune sextile. The day is forgiving as a result of the Moon’s conjunction with Neptune and benefic sextiles to Venus and Mercury. However, Venus’ square to Eris may stir up some trouble. Mercury is grinding to a standstill tomorrow, ready to turn retrograde.

Messenger Planet Mercury stations on Thursday at 24:21 degrees Capricorn, turning retrograde for the next three weeks until January 18. Stationary Mercury is significant as Mercury conjuncts Venus exactly, is nearly conjunct Pluto, and squares Eris. The Moon entered vigorous cardinal fire sign Aries in the early morning. The Moon-Chiron conjunction later in the evening beckon us to consider our fears and insecurities and what we need to change to heal these issues.

On Friday the Sun makes an irritating quincunx to Mars, begging us to slow down and be more considerate. The bold Aries Moon conjuncts Eris and squares retrograde Mercury, rousing difficulties with communication. Be careful and mindful as you move through this potentially reckless day.

Saturday, the last day of 2022, is a powerful one. The Aries Moon conjunct Eris, and squares Venus and Pluto that are conjunct, stirring a zest for love and life. This is a showdown, passionate combination that may help us express ardent emotions, perhaps deep into territory we have feared to tread. A stable Taurus Moon will anchor the ship in stormy seas, but may also give a resistance to change.

New Year’s Day offers a calm and stable Sun-Moon trine. Yet, a Moon-Uranus conjunction may take us off track and deliver some surprises. There’s also a volatile Mars-Eris minor aspect, so be careful about what you say. Yet, a Mercury-Neptune sextile will help smooth the waters if the sea of communication gets too rough. Overall this is a great day that invites ambition and thoughtfulness about the year ahead.

Monday is an active day with numerous planetary aspects, both easeful and challenging. The Capricorn Sun and Taurus North Node help us find agreeable solutions. Benefic aspects of the Moon to Mercury, Neptune, and Jupiter contribute to the ease of the day. Challenging aspects include a Moon-Saturn square and a Sun-Saturn square. Venus moves into Aquarius late in the day, ushering in a focus on friendship and diverse cultural experiences for the next three weeks.

Wednesday: Inspired, forgiving day.

Thursday: Vigorous, adventurous day. Mercury turns retrograde until January 18. Heal insecurities by considering what needs to change.

Friday: Slow down and be considerate with communication.

Saturday: New Year’s Eve: Passionate day for love and life. Be anchored in the stormy seas and possibilities.

Sunday: New Year’s Day: A great day for setting New Year’s resolutions for change. Be ambitious and thoughtful about the year ahead.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it is difficult to make good decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together, and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. We more easily get lost or meander in trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.
