In the Stars January 1-8, 2023 . . . Shining Light on the Astrology of the Week

The Sun now shines in Capricorn. Winter is here, a time to hibernate, rest, and incubate. This barren, cold, dormant time is needed to enable a strong budding and growing season in the spring and summer. We need more sleep.

Mercury is retrograde until January 18, inviting us to re-group, re-think, and reconsider. It is a good time to revise plans and writing projects. At the same time, communication is more easily confused, so be patient with errors and mistakes.

Jupiter is now in Aries. More visionary, expansive, creative energy is available, helping projects move forward. Mars and Uranus are still retrograde, turning direct on January 12 and January 22 respectively. After January 22nd all planets will be direct in motion until Mercury again goes retrograde on April 20th.

Only Mars continues Out of Bounds (OOB), and will be until May 4th. Planets are OOB when their declination is more than 23 degrees, 27 minutes. When planets are OOB their energy is wild, unique, and extraordinary. The planet expresses itself unbounded, or without limits. People may be much more courageous and outspoken than usual. Because Mars is explosive and impulsive, volatile energy may be unleashed.

New Year’s Day offers a calm and stable Sun-Moon trine. Yet, a Moon-Uranus conjunction may take us off track and deliver some surprises. There’s also a volatile Mars-Eris minor aspect, so be careful about what you say. Yet, a Mercury-Neptune sextile will help calm the waters if the sea of communication gets too rough. Overall this is a great day that invites ambition and thoughtfulness about the year ahead.

Monday is an active day with numerous planetary aspects, both easeful and challenging. The Capricorn Sun and Taurus North Node help us find agreeable solutions. Benefic aspects of the Moon to Mercury, Neptune, and Jupiter contribute to the ease of the day. Challenging aspects include a Moon-Saturn square and a Sun-Saturn square. Venus moves into Aquarius late in the day, ushering in a focus on friendship and diverse cultural experiences for the next three weeks.

We are blessed with ideas on Tuesday with the Moon’s conjunction with Mars. Mars is still retrograde until January 12th and Mercury is retrograde until January 18, so it is not time to leap into action, but you can re-think plans, goals, and strategies. Venus and Jupiter are sextile for the next few days, and may provide opportunities for doors to open in love and money.

Wednesday is an upbeat, sociable day of easy conversation. Venus and Jupiter perfect in a sextile, contributing positive energy to the day. The day’s practical matters are handled with the support of a Moon-Saturn trine, but the Moon’s square to Neptune may give a lack of clarity with some matters later in the day.

Thursday is a compassionate day focused on home, family, and comfort as a result of the Moon’s placement in Cancer. The Moon’s square to Jupiter and Ceres can stretch us beyond our capacity and make us feel overly concerned or depleted. Reach out and do a good deed to help someone or give a listening ear.

Friday’s Full Moon invites us to focus on home and make it more comfortable. Lend a listening ear and start a compassionate conversation with a loved one.

While Saturday holds a lot compassion with the Moon-Neptune trine, storms brew as a result of Pluto opposing the Moon, and Eris making an edgy square aspect. Moods shift and emotions are heightened. The Moon moves into fun-loving Leo at 6:40 p.m. PST, in time for a fun dinner party on the west coast.

A Moon-Mars sextile invites us to get moving on Sunday morning. Mercury makes a benefic trine to Uranus, filling us with brilliant ideas. Given that Mercury is retrograde, we may figure out a different way of doing something, or solve a problem through re-thinking or reconsidering.

Monday is influenced by an affectionate Mars-Venus trine. However, Saturn’s opposition to the Moon may dampen spirits. Yet, the Leo Moon shines through enthusiastically and playfully.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it is difficult to make good decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together, and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. We more easily get lost or meander in trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.
