In the Stars December 18-25, 2022 . . . Shining Light on the Astrology of the Week

The Sun moves from Sagittarius to Capricorn tropically this week. The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, arrives Wednesday, December 21st when the Sun ingresses into Capricorn, marking the beginning of winter.

Jupiter ingresses into Aries on December 20th. Chiron turns direct December 22nd, joining Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. More forward momentum is garnered. Mars and Uranus are still retrograde, turning direct on January 12 and January 22 respectively.

Mars, Venus, and Mercury, are Out of Bounds (OOB). Mars will be OOB for nearly six months until May 4th. Planets are OOB when their declination is more than 23 degrees, 27 minutes. When planets are out of bounds their energy is wild, unique, and extraordinary. The planet expresses itself unbounded, or without limits. Mars retrograde and OOB in Gemini these next few months will be fascinating to watch. People may be much more courageous and outspoken than usual. Because Mars is explosive and impulsive, volatile energy may be unleashed.

Although Sunday is anchored by a Moon-Saturn trine, the day holds some contentious minor aspects involving the Moon and volatile planets Pluto, Mars, and Eris. Hold to the optimism of the Sagittarius Sun, but be careful not to lash out at others due to your own irritations or hurt feelings. The Moon enters Scorpio tropically at 7:31 p.m. PST, drawing us into the deep emotional waters of Scorpio where we are more sensitive, and want to carve out some solitary time. You will want to draw your energy inward the next two days before the Sun leaves Sagittarius and the shortest day of the year comes at the Winter Solstice occurring on Wednesday.

Monday is the first day of Chanukah. Assess if there is any clean-up to do on Monday morning regarding the emotional storms of yesterday. A Venus-North Node trine draws us toward love and beauty. Yet, a Moon-Uranus opposition may rock the boat with disruptions, or offer new perspectives and bring surprises. Express yourself in a new way.

Tuesday’s big news is that Jupiter ingresses into Aries tropically. The planet of expansion and generosity begins a new cycle at the beginning of the Zodiac. In the next few months we will feel a call to adventure. We brush against limitations as the Scorpio Moon squares Saturn. The Moon’s benefic aspects to Neptune and Pluto bring inspiration and empowerment.

Wednesday is the Winter Solstice, the shortest daytime of the year in the northern hemisphere, and the ingress of the Sun into Capricorn tropically, marking the beginning of winter. The Sun squares Jupiter, giving expansion perhaps beyond our comfort level. The Sag Moon opposes Mars, giving drive and energy. This is an expansive, optimistic day.

Thursday’s Venus-Uranus trine offers freedom and independence in relationships and money matters. The Moon is void of course all afternoon and evening from 12:15 p.m. through 11:49 p.m. PST, during which time it is best to focus on insignificant activities. I’ll be skiing in Tahoe, perfect activity when the Moon is in Sagittarius as Sag rules the thighs. The Moon squares Neptune, softening our focus and giving way to dreaming a better future. This is a day for outdoor adventure, inspiration, and relaxation.

Friday, December 23, is a day of planetary action. Chiron turns direct in Aries, confronting us with our wounds and insecurities. A new lunar cycle begins with the Sun and Moon aligning at 1 degree of Capricorn in a New Moon alignment. This New Moon calls for setting goals for the next month, the next three months of winter, or for the year ahead.

Christmas Eve (Saturday) we are feeling emotionally stable in the light of the Capricorn Moon that conjuncts Mercury and Venus. Yet, this Saturday Christmas Eve evening may feel intense with the Moon conjunct Pluto. Our emotional commitment is profound. Make it a deeply meaningful day.

Christmas Day (Sunday) is a light day of activity in the cosmos. The Aquarius Moon trines Mars in Gemini, creating an inclusive, affable, friendly atmosphere for holiday celebrations. Include a brisk walk in your day. The Moon’s square to the nodes invites us to connect with family and friends past and present.

Monday is the last day of Chanukah and the first day of Kwanza. A Moon-Saturn conjunction draws us toward our responsibilities. An acrimonious Mercury-Eris square may rock the boat and create agitation. The Moon is void of course from 10:19 a.m. to 11:33 p.m. Take it easy and stick to routine activities or take time out to read a book.

The Week in Short:

Sunday: Testy day emotionally. Hold the optimism of the Sagittarius Sun.

Monday: First day of Chanukah. Tend to any necessary emotional clean-up from yesterday. Expect the unexpected, and dwell on love and beauty.

Tuesday: Jupiter turns direct. Generosity is a theme, and we are called to adventure over the coming months.

Wednesday: Winter Solstice. Sun enters Capricorn. Optimism abounds.

Thursday: Seek adventure and dream a better future. Moon Voc 12:15-11:49 p.m. PST, a time for inconsequential activities.

Friday: New Moon in Capricorn. Set goals for the next month, for winter, or for the new year.

Saturday: Strong, emotionally stable day. Profound Christmas Eve. Make it meaningful.

Sunday: Friendly, inclusive energy for Christmas celebrations.

Monday: Anchored in our responsibilities in the morning, we’re free to chill out with routine activities the rest of the day. Moon VoC 10:19 a.m.-11:33 p.m. PST.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it is difficult to make good decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together, and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. We more easily get lost or meander in trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.
