In the Stars September 13-20, 2020...shining light on the astrology of the week: New Moon in Virgo
This week brings a New Moon at 25:01 Virgo on Thursday, September 17th. As the week begins we move through the dark Moon, a time to finish projects and take some space for yourself, especially on Wednesday. Mars turned stationary retrograde on September 9th, and Jupiter turned stationary direct on Saturday, September 12th. The retrograde count is still strong with five planets, asteroid Ceres, and Chiron in backward motion, and so we continue working in the underground of numerous planetary energies in backward motion. Jupiter direct now will likely bring improvements, after four months in retrograde. The direct motion of the planet of expansion signals a time to move forward with business plans, amplify your expectations, and manifest abundance. Mars’ tense square to Pluto and Saturn pushes limits and edges, and keeps things moving. This week continues to be dynamic and potent. The Sun’s benefic trine to power planets Pluto, Saturn and Jupiter adds high energy, determination, and the capacity to get a lot accomplished. To subscribe to this blog, click here.
Saturday’s big planetary news is that Jupiter is stationary, turning direct after a four-month retrograde spin. When planets are stationary their energy is amplified, so this is an expansive day to imagine new possibilities. The Cancer Moon opposes Jupiter, and then Pluto and Saturn; emotions may move up and down with the day’s dramatic events. The Moon’s benefic aspects to the Sun and Neptune make us feel strong, satisfied, and inspired.
Sunday morning you may be slow to get out of bed and get going as the Moon is void of course. Then at 8:32 a.m. PDT the Moon bounces into fiery, playful Leo, and you get your game on. Mars opposes Juno, pressing relationship issues; employ the tension creatively and be passionate. Sunday is grandparents’ day, so be sure to express your gratitude.
Monday is a powerful day, blessed by a Sun-Pluto trine. The Leo Moon makes benefic aspects to Mercury and Uranus. Be courageous, creative, and joyful.
Tuesday morning’s Moon-Mars trine in fire signs gets us up and moving. This energetic alignment then sets the stage for a void Moon period from 8:10 a.m. through 11:37 a.m. PDT, during which we should stick to routine tasks rather than spend our time in meetings or activities calling for decisions. AT 11:37 a.m. PDT the Moon moves into the mutable earth sign Virgo which symbolizes attention to health, self-improvement, organization, and cleanliness. This is the time of the month for us to clean house, get organized, and attend to numerous small details on our lists.
The backdrop Wednesday is the solid, grounded Virgo Moon. The Moon trines Uranus in the early morning; our intended schedule may be diverted and the morning could result in surprises. A Moon-Jupiter trine late in the afternoon fosters optimism, and may result in over-reach, or over-extension. Then, a Moon-Neptune opposition draws us toward what inspires us. The Moon is dark, just before a New Moon forms tomorrow. This is a time to withdraw into yourself and take some space.
The New Moon perfects early Thursday morning at 4:00 a.m. PDT at 25:01 Virgo. Shortly thereafter we have a void Moon period until nearly noon, so don’t waste energy getting anything significant started before noon. The Sun and Moon form a benefic trine to Saturn and Pluto. The Saturn trine to the New Moon supports hard work and attention to details. This is a productive day infused with the energy of new beginnings.
Friday is a day of mixed energy, held together by the grace of the Libra Moon. The Moon squares both Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn, perhaps making us feel overextended, and somewhat frustrated. At the same time, the Moon-Mercury conjunction may help us solve problems rationally and justly. Libra loves beauty, so intentionally bring more of it into your day by looking at a book with beautiful pictures, beautifying your home with flowers, or walking in gorgeous place. The Sun is still in a separating trine to Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn, so much of yesterday’s great potential is still available.
Saturday morning meanders with a void Moon from 7:28 a.m. until 11:32 a.m. when the Moon moves into Scorpio and dives deep emotionally. Saturday the 19th is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish holiday intended for reviewing actions during the past year, and looking for ways to improve ourselves, our communities, and our world in the year to come. The holiday marks the beginning of a 10-day period culminating with Yom Kippur (the “Day of Atonement”). Prayer and reflection are aspects of the Jewish experience of Rosh Hashanah, and the Scorpio Moon invites us into this deep space.
Sunday is an emotionally rocky day. A Moon-Uranus opposition sets the stage for a turbulent morning. The Moon is in the deep emotional waters of Scorpio. Mercury and Pluto make an edgy square, and we may feel emotionally reactive due to a Moon-Venus square. We feel the complexity of problems, and are ready to tackle deep issues.
Monday is a lighter day than the last two days. The Scorpio Moon makes benefic sextiles to powerful planets Pluto, Saturn, and the Sun, giving confidence and inviting serious work. After a short midday void Moon period (11:13 – 12:32 p.m. PDT), the Moon bounces into optimistic Sagittarius where silver linings shine brightly.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it is difficult to make good decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together, and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. We more easily get lost or meander in trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.
