In the Stars June 30-July 7, 2024 . . . Shining Light on the Astrology of the Week
Saturn turns retrograde on Saturday, June 29 at 19:25 degrees of Pisces, and will travel in backward motion for four and a half months until November 15. Neptune follows, turning retrograde on Tuesday, July 2 at the anaretic degree (29:55) of Pisces. Neptune will be retrograde for five months until December 7. When planets turn direction their energy is amplified. The symbolism of Saturn and Neptune will be strong the next few days: duty, work, responsibility, limitation, and mastery combined with vision, inspiration, imagination, and illusion.
The Sun continues to shine in Cancer tropically, symbolizing themes of home, family, tradition, and compassion and caring. The United States was founded with a Cancer Sun; history and patriotism are strong American values. We celebrate Independence Day this week on Thursday with the Sun in Cancer. This is a time for family picnics, visits, and gatherings. It is a time for gardening, cooking, and caring for home and property. You may want to revisit family photo albums. Reach out with compassion for all.
A New Moon in Cancer forms on Friday, July 5. Set intentions around themes of home, family, tradition, and nurturing.

Saturday’s big planetary news is that Saturn (Saturday’s planet) is stationary retrograde, making the symbolism of Saturn extra strong (duty, work, contraction, limitation). Saturn turns direction at 19:25 degrees of Pisces, and will travel in backward motion until November 15. Saturn’s taciturn, work-oriented influence turns us toward responsibilities It is a testy, argumentative day with the Mars-ruled Aries Moon conjunct anger-prone Eris and square to Mercury. Discharge irritations by getting work done.
The Moon is in Taurus on Sunday and Monday, providing a stable, practical foundation. The Moon squares Pluto early Sunday, June 30, generating push and resistance. Taurus loves to indulge in life’s simple pleasures. Sunday is a good day for cooking, gardening, and tending to home. In the light of a Sun-Moon sextile, enjoy an evening with good food, drink, and company.
The determined Taurus Moon and Mars conjunct on Monday, the first day of July, boosting productivity, which may be needed to support a leisurely holiday a few days later on July 4th. The Moon’s benefic sextiles to Venus and Saturn provide good support. However, the Sun’s semi-square to Uranus in the evening may be unsettling and signal change, which Taurus does not like.
Neptune stations retrograde on Tuesday, July 2 at the last degree of Pisces, 29:55. Neptune will move retrograde for five months until December 7. When planets turn direction, their symbolism is strong. Thus, the few days surrounding Tuesday may be colored with intuition, inspiration, and illusion. Mercury in Cancer is trine to Neptune as it stations, opening us to intuitive guidance. Then Mercury moves into Leo and opposes Pluto, empowering our thoughts, perhaps creating some mental or verbal battles over strong differences of opinion. The Moon is in Gemini, making benefic aspects to Mercury and Pluto, and Moon conjunct Jupiter, inspiring expansive ideas. The Gemini Moon seeks variety, activity, and conversation.
Mercury opposite Pluto is still the theme of Wednesday. Deep thoughts and ideas are pervasive. Truths may be revealed. The Gemini Moon squares Saturn, curbing our enthusiasm and fact-checking our thoughts.
Independence Day July 4 holds a Moon-Neptune square in the morning that may make us feel indecisive about how to proceed for the day. At 1:51 p.m. PDT the Moon moves into Cancer, and then we’ll happily enjoy holiday picnics and gatherings.
A New Moon in Cancer forms at 3:57 p.m. PDT on Friday, July 5. The Sun and Moon oppose Ceres, tying together the planetary themes of nurturing and tending to home and family. New Moons are opportunities to set intentions for the lunar cycle ahead. Consider the goals you want to set around themes of family, connection, comfort, and compassion.
The Mars-Saturn sextile offers stability and energy for completing the weekend’s household chores on Saturday, July 6. The Moon’s sextile to Uranus may take us off course in the afternoon and invite a different scenario than expected.
Since you took care of the weekend chores yesterday, Sunday is a day for play and fun in the light of the Leo Moon. The day is buoyed by the Moon’s conjunction with Mercury and sextile to Jupiter. On the other hand, a Venus-Eris square may create problems with relationships. Use the creative juice of the Leo Moon to solve problems and generate joy.
A Venus-Uranus sextile on Monday July 8, invites new possibilities in relationships. A Mercury-Jupiter sextile opens our mind and enables us to generate expansive ideas. The Moon’s squares to Mars and Uranus inspire action and breakthrough.

Moon Void of Course:
This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it is difficult to make good decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together, and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. We more easily get lost or meander in trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.Void-of-Course Moon times for the month ahead (one lunar cycle):Pacific Standard Time:
